Electric vehicles have been on the road for about 200 years, but gasoline vehicles overtook them after World War I. These cars are regarded as the next major step toward more sustainable and ecologically friendly urban mobility after various adjustments and technological advancements. The First Electric Car

  1. The invention of the electric car was the result of several developments and improvements.
  2. The Hungarian engineer and inventor Nyos Jedlik, who in 1828 invented the world’s first electric motor and later used it to power a miniature model automobile, is one of the most significant figures in the history of the industry.
  3. Thomas Davenport, an American blacksmith, created a similar device in 1834 that ran on a circular electrified track at the same time. But Robert Anderson, a chemist and businessman from Scotland, is often credited as being the inventor of the electric vehicle. He developed and showed a prototype for a traditional carriage that was powered by electric cells between 1832 and 1839.

The Flocken Elektrowagen, created by the inventor and businessman Andreas Flocken, is thought to have been the first electric vehicle to debut in Germany in 1888. With four wheels, a 0.7 kW motor, a 100 kilogram battery, and a top speed of 15 km/h, it was built like a buggy. The Belgian Camille Jenatzy broke the 100 km/h speed barrier for the first time in history in 1899, reaching a speed of 105.88 km/h. This achievement marked the end of the 19th century in the automobile industry.

WHEN DID ELECTRIC CARS COME INTO USE?

  1. The electric vehicle gained popularity in cities in the early 20th century after the invention of the rechargeable battery. New York cab drivers were the first commercial users. While some sources assert that these automobiles outsold combustion engines in 1899 and 1900, historians believe that about one-third of the cars on American streets in 1900 were electric.
  2. Large hotels with fleets of electric vehicles for guest transportation followed suit, as did taxi drivers in other cities including London and Berlin.
  3. Porsche Egger-Lohner P1 and Baker Electric were among the sold vehicles, while Ohio Baker Electric, a company, used Thomas Edison-designed batteries in their products.

How did Combustion cars overtook EV’s

Automatic Start

The main issue, starting the engine, was resolved. The combustion engine had to be started by turning a crank in the past, which was a tiresome operation for drivers. However, the introduction of an automatic starter improved the driving experience.

Chain Production

By launching the Ford T, a combustion-powered car manufactured on a production line approach that significantly reduced the final price, Henry Ford revolutionized the automobile business in 1908. A gasoline car cost USD 650 in 1912, compared to USD 1,750 for an electric vehicle.

Discovery of oil reserves

Significant oil reserves were found all over the world, which reduced the price of gasoline.

India’s Electric Vehicle Situation Right Now

The market for electric vehicles (EVs) has expanded in recent months. In comparison to the 322,871 units sold in CY2021, the 999,949 EVs sold in CY2022 indicate a huge 210% year-over-year gain. The majority of the increase is being attributed to the two- and three-wheeler segments, which are known as the “close to the bottom peaches” of the EV industry. Because they are less expensive than the electric passenger or commercial vehicle classes, they are the key factors driving EV sales.
